Mosquito Breeding
It’s just a fact that stagnant water collects around a property. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in standing water; it’s the ideal environment for their larvae to thrive and develop into adults. Within days after filling, a single container can produce hundreds of mosquitoes, exacerbating the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Preventative Measures
To safeguard a property from mosquitoes, locate and eliminate their breeding sites. Inspect your property for objects or areas where water accumulates, like clogged gutters, buckets, outdoor toys, or even a bottle cap. Emptying and overturning containers after rainstorms prevents stagnant water, depriving them of their breeding habitat. Throwing away the containers is recommended. Don’t forget that sprinklers can refill these items with water too.

Mosquitoes pose more than just a nuisance—they’re also a health risk. Mosquito borne diseases cause symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe illness and, in some cases, even death. Remove Standing Water
A small amount of water in a neglected bucket, bottle, cup, toy, or clogged rain gutter can produce hundreds of new mosquitoes in just a few days. Even the hollow of a tree can collect water and be a breeding ground, as can be seen in this picture below. Fill the hole with dirt.
When Outside
Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks to cover exposed skin. Use mosquito nets over outdoor seating areas, gazebos, and hammocks to create a barrier between you and the mosquitoes.
Mosquito Repelling Plants and Traps
Plants like citronella, lavender, and marigold help repel mosquitoes. There are several types of mosquito traps available such as CO2, heat, or light to attract and trap mosquitoes; and don’t forget bug zappers.
Simple Tips to Control Mosquitoes
- Install screens on windows and doors.
- Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes out.
- Walk your property regularly to locate items containing water.
- Stop mosquitoes from laying eggs on your property by emptying, turning over, or throwing away items with standing water.
Known for their itchy bites and tendency to swarm around people, mosquitoes carry diseases, like West Nile virus and Zika virus, which threaten human health. This makes being outside in a backyard uncomfortable and even dangerous, especially during the summer when mosquito populations are at their highest.
