Using Primer before paint is not an option on most surfaces, it must be done. The latin root of the word primer is primarius, which means “first”. The word has been used in English since the late 1300’s. There is a primer for every type of job; whether it’s a new surface, covering stains, rust proofing, blocking odors, going over darker colors with lighter ones, or as an undercoat for specific colors of paint.

Apply primer as the first coat on a surface. Primer seals the surface, blocks stains, and prepares it for the protective paint layer. Make sure every coat of paint adheres firmly to the surface beneath it. Each layer must create enough tooth for the next coat to bond. The first coat must contain enough binder to penetrate and anchor into the material. It must also leave enough binder on the surface to accept the finish paint. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safety, cure time, and recoating time.
Most major manufacturers produce their own primer lines. Companies such as Benjamin Moore, Dunn-Edwards, C2, Sherwin-Williams, and Behr offer branded primers. Specialty brands such as Kilz, Zinsser, and Rust-Oleum also focus on primers. Primer quality varies significantly between products. Research your options and choose the primer that fits your project. Do not assume that a matching brand automatically provides the best performance.
