All Los Angeles Staining, Varnishing & Refinishing For Original Beauty Through Restoration Call (310) 470-9218 A source of enjoyment for any homeowner is the visual transformation of tired furniture, cabinets or stained items restored to their original condition. Varnish and clear lacquers are transparent, protective finishes used principally for wood finishing. Varnish is traditionally a combination of a drying oil, a resin, and a thinner or solvent. Varnish and Lacquer finishes come in a range from flat to satin, to semi-gloss and glossy. Varnish has little or no color, is transparent, and has no added pigment, as opposed to paints or wood stains, which contain pigment and generally range from opaque to translucent. Varnishes and Lacquers can also be applied over wood stains as a top coat to create a film for gloss and protection. There are also products that are marketed as a combined stain and varnish. Spar varnish (also called marine varnish) was originally designed for use on ship or boat spars, to protect timber from the effects of sea and weather. The primary requirements were water resistance and also elasticity so as to maintain adhesion. Spar varnishes elasticity is important for weatherproofing too, as a finish that cracked would allow water through, and compromising the integrity of the film finish and the wood door it is protecting. Spar varnishes look good and when applied by All Los Angeles Painting Company, Inc. can give a glass like finish to exterior wood. Exterior spar varnish must be maintained with an additional top coat every 6-12 months.
