Psychology of Color

Color has a significant psychological impact on our mood and emotions. It contributes to the energy level or behavior you want to create in a space: happy, energetic, creative, focused or calming. When picking an interior decorating scheme, consider the effects colors have on people. Here are some colors and the effects they create:

  1. Blue: Blue is associated with calmness, tranquility, and stability. It reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Use in a bedroom or bathroom, to create a serene, peaceful decorating scheme.
  2. Green: Green creates a feeling of calmness and balance. It is associated with growth, renewal, and abundance. Greens work well in a living room or study, as they promote concentration and focus.
  3. Yellow: Yellow is a cheerful hue that conveys energy and optimism. It’s associated with feelings of happiness and creativity. In a kitchen or dining room, yellow creates a warm and inviting aesthetic.
  4. Red: Red is a bold, energetic tone that conveys excitement and passion. It helps stimulate the mind and promote activity. Use a shade of red to create an energetic atmosphere in a home gym or entertainment room.
  5. Purple: Purple is associated with luxury and creativity. Use it to create a sense of relaxation and calmness. In a bedroom or living room, purple provides a sophisticated and elegant look.
  6. Gray: Gray is a neutral that emits calmness and serenity. It works well in a bedroom or study.

By understanding the psychology of color, and selecting colors that create a specific mood or aesthetic, you design a stylish space that also promotes a positive emotional state.

Understanding Undertones

After selecting your main color, understand that every color has two main components: A mass tone and an undertone. The mass tone is what people call the color, such as white, off-white, yellow, blue, etc. An undertone is the subtle difference that makes a color unique. Undertones vary in intensity and shade; this impacts the overall look of a painted surface. Pictured here are differently toned Sherwin Williams Off-Whites.
