The Pittsburgh Steelers team colors were originally part of the logo for the American Iron and Steel Institute. It features a circle around three four-pointed geometric shapes called hypocycloids in yellow, red and blue. Those colors represent the three materials used to make steel: yellow for coal, red for iron ore and blue for steel scrap.

The team’s founder, Art Rooney, said he chose these colors because they were distinctive and would make the team easy to spot on the field. The Steelers have one of the most recognizable color schemes in all of sports. They have become synonymous with the team and the city.
The Steelers’ original uniform featured gold jerseys with black stripes that later became known as the “bumblebee” jerseys. By 1968, they adopted the designs that have largely remained the same to this day. In 1975, the Steelers debuted the “terrible towel” as a symbol of Steelers Pride. To this day, the terrible towel turns the crowd at Heinz Field into a sea of black and gold.
Pittsburgh’s division rivals are the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals. Currently, Pittsburgh has a winning record against all three.
