The 1972 Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to have a perfect season. To this day, no other team has remained undefeated in both the regular season and playoffs in a single season. Founded in 1966, the Dolphins became the American Football League’s ninth expansion team.
Miami beat the Redskins, 14-7, in Super Bowl VII to cap off their 17-0 perfect season. The following season, they became back-to-back champions when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 24-7, in Super Bowl VIII. Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula led the Dolphins for 26 seasons, including a perfect season in 1972.
