The San Francisco 49ers name was inspired by the “Forty-Niners” of the California gold rush of the previous century. Ironically, the team’s uniform color scheme was mostly devoid of gold in its early years, relying instead on red and silver. As a nod to the team’s namesakes, gold was phased into the helmets and pants in the 1960’s. The colors gained nationwide notoriety in the 1980’s and 1990’s, when the team won five superbowl championships (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX).
The San Francisco 49ers began playing in 1946 as charter members of the All-America Football Conference. The AAFC merged with the NFL in 1949 and the 49ers became the 10th-oldest franchise in the NFL. The 49ers became the first team to win 15 games after the league expanded to a 16-game season in 1978. They went 15-1 in 1984.
