Understanding Color Basics

Understanding the color wheel makes picking the right hues easier. The color wheel pictured here is based on three primary colors, three secondary colors and six intermediates. Intermediates are formed by mixing a primary with a secondary color, they are called tertiary colors.

Primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Primary colors are the three colors that can’t be made by mixing with other colors. These three colors can be mixed to create all the other colors and be combined with white or black to create tints (lighter tones) and shades (darker tones) of these colors.

Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors for example, mixing blue and red make purple. Red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green.

Tertiary colors are made by mixing primary with secondary colors. Varying the proportions of these colors creates different tertiary colors.

Using the Color Wheel

Use a Color Wheel to make changing colors easy. To change color shades, find the tone on the color wheel that is similar to the one you want and add a dash of the primary color that is closest to it on the wheel. If you want to make your original color lighter, just add white. If you have a hue that you want to look more muted and atmospheric, add a dark brown or gray.

Here are some ideas for selecting a color scheme:

Monochromatic: This uses shades and tints of the same color. For example, if you choose blue as your primary color, you might use light blue, navy blue, and everything in between.

Analogous: This uses colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, if you choose blue as your primary color, you might use blue-green and blue-purple as accent colors.

Complementary: This uses colors that are opposite each other on the wheel. For example, if you choose blue as your primary color, you might use orange as an accent color.

Considering undertones: When choosing paint colors, it’s important to consider undertones. This is the underlying hue that affects how a color appears in different lighting situations. For example, a beige might have yellow or pink undertones, which affects how it looks when paired with other colors.

It’s a good idea to test colors before committing to a full room. Paint a small swatch on the wall and observe how it appears in different lighting situations throughout the day. By understanding color theory basics, choosing a color scheme, and understanding undertones you can easily bring your decorating scheme to life.

Exploring Color Options Before You Paint

Painting the outside of your house is a major home improvement project. It’s about restyling your home, showing off your unique personality, and capturing the attention of passersby. There are so many colors and color combinations; it’s difficult to pick the right one. How do you know which tone or shade is best? Exploring color options before you paint is an easy way to do it.

One way to view your upcoming color refresh before you paint is to produce color renderings, like the one here. Here’s how it’s done, take a before picture of the house, space or surface. Next, experiment with various color schemes superimposed on the picture. This lets you see mock-ups of your house before paying for paint and painters. Good color choices enhance the value and visual appeal of a property, and helps you maximize home maintenance dollars. Whether you’re looking to sell or want an aesthetic to make family, friends and neighbors envious, before and after color renderings are the way to go.

Coloration: Bright Colors vs. Muted Hues

Pictured here are two purple color chip cards from Pittsburgh Paints. The terms “bright colors” and “muted colors” are ways to classify different shading within the same color group. The brighter tones tend to have very little white or black tints added. Brighter shades appear sharper and trendier and they often appeal to people who like to decorate more frequently. The shaded, muted colors have black and white pigments. They have a longer lasting, more classic appeal. Chip B36 has the muted colors, while Chip A35 has the brighter colors.
